About CLEO

CLEO is a community legal clinic, founded in 1974, that specializes in public legal education.

CLEO is administered by a volunteer board of directors, and funded by Legal Aid Ontario and the Department of Justice Canada.  Staff include lawyers, editors and support staff.

Who we serve...
Most of our publications are written for people with low incomes, and other disadvantaged groups, including immigrants and refugees, seniors, women and injured workers.  Community legal clinics, agencies and organizations also use our publications to help clients with legal problems.  By describing the law as simply and clearly as possible, our materials help people understand and exercise their legal rights.

About our materials...
Most of our materials are in the form of booklets, pamphlets, fact sheets and manuals.  About a million copies of CLEO materials are distributed each year.

Topics include social assistance, landlord and tenant law, refugee and immigration law, workers' rights, family law, elder abuse, consumer rights, women's issues and laws affecting young people.  Most publications are available in French, and some are available in other languages.

Most of our publications are free, and there is no charge for delivery.  You can order publications directly from this website by going to our home page and clicking on "Publications" and then "Order form," or you can call 416-408-4420 and ask us to mail you an order form.

Many of our publications are also posted and you can view and print them from this site.  From the home page, go to "Publications" and then "Publications Online" to see what's available. (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or print publications.)

About legal content...
Materials are regularly updated to reflect changes in the law. New publications are developed in response to community needs.  CLEO develops and revises materials in collaboration with other community legal clinics, community organizations, and lawyers in private practice. Community groups help CLEO identify and address the issues facing their clients.
