Do you have to share a kitchen or bathroom with the owner or owner's immediate family?

"Immediate family" means the owner's child, parent, or spouse (this includes married or common-law, same sex or opposite sex); or the child or parent of the owner's spouse. It does not include brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or grandchild.

"Owner" does not necessarily mean your landlord. For example, your landlord might be a superintendent, or a person who rents the whole building from the owner and then rents out rooms or units to other people.

Answer Yes if the owner or any member of the owner's immediate family lives in the same building as you, and you are required to share a kitchen or bathroom with them.

Answer No if:

  • you share a kitchen or bathroom with the owner or a member of the owner's immediate family, but that person does not live in the same building; or
  • you have to share with other people, but not with the owner or a member of the owner's immediate family.
