Legal Aid Ontario (LAO)
LAO provides legal help for low-income people, including:
- A toll-free call centre that gives general legal information and advice, as well as information about other social service providers, in over 200 languages
- Help from courthouse lawyers (called duty counsel) for people who are in court without a lawyer
- Certificates (vouchers to pay for a lawyer to represent you) for people who need a lawyer for some criminal, family, and immigration and refugee law problems
- Legal consultation for victims of domestic violence
To get help from LAO, your legal problem must be one that LAO covers, and you must be financially eligible.
