Taking time off work: For new and expecting parents
How much time can I take off work?
A birth mother can take up to 61 weeks of parental leave. This is in addition to the 17 weeks of pregnancy leave. So her total leave can be up to 78 weeks.
All other parents can take up to 63 weeks of parental leave.
But if the baby was born or came into the parents' custody and care before December 3, 2017, the old rules apply. The birth mother can take only 35 weeks of parental leave and other parents can take 37 weeks.
