Many Indigenous children were forced to give up their traditional names when they were taken from their families and sent to residential schools. The <a href=\"https:\/\/nctr.ca\/about\/history-of-the-trc\/truth-and-reconciliation-commission-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Truth and Reconciliation Commission<\/a> made a <a href=\"https:\/\/nctr.ca\/about\/history-of-the-trc\/truth-and-reconciliation-commission-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">call to action<\/a> for governments to let Indigenous peoples reclaim their traditional name at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the Ontario government has waived the fees for residential school survivors and their families to reclaim their traditional names until March 31, 2024.
