This includes all new parents, not just the parent who gives birth. It also includes anyone who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is in what the law calls &#8220;a relationship of some permanence&#8221; with a parent of the child, and<\/li>\n<li>is going to treat the child as their own.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each parent can take a full parental leave, either at the same time as another parent or at a different time.<\/p>\n<p>Parents who give birth can take both pregnancy leave and parental leave.<\/p>\n<h2>When can I start my parental leave?<\/h2>\n<p>Usually, a parent who takes pregnancy leave must begin their parental leave as soon as the pregnancy leave ends.<\/p>\n<p>But if your baby has not come into your care by then, you can wait until that happens before starting your parental leave.<\/p>\n<p>For example, your baby might have to stay in the hospital after your pregnancy leave ends.<\/p>\n<p>Other parents can start their parental leave any time within 78 weeks, which is about 18 months, after the date their child:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is born, or<\/li>\n<li>first comes into their care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-46567","publications-page","type-publications-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Parental leave - CLEO (Community Legal Education Ontario \/ \u00c9ducation juridique communautaire Ontario)<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleo.on.ca\/en\/publications-page\/parental-leave\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_US\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Parental leave - CLEO (Community Legal Education Ontario \/ \u00c9ducation juridique communautaire Ontario)\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Any new parent who has worked at least 13 weeks for their employer can take parental leave.
