{"id":46576,"date":"2015-06-16T21:45:14","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T01:45:14","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2026-02-05T11:26:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T16:26:20","slug":"if-i-was-fired-or-i-quit-what-will-happen-when-i-apply-ei","status":"publish","type":"publications-page","link":"https:\/\/www.cleo.on.ca\/en\/publications-page\/if-i-was-fired-or-i-quit-what-will-happen-when-i-apply-ei","title":{"rendered":"What happens if I apply after I quit or was fired?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you apply, you have to answer questions on a special form if you quit or were fired.<\/p>\n<p>If you quit, you have to say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>why you quit<\/li>\n<li>if you tried to fix the problem at work before you quit<\/li>\n<li>if you tried to get other work before you quit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you were fired, you have to say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>why you were fired<\/li>\n<li>if your employer gave you any warnings<\/li>\n<li>if you tried to fix the problem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you have filled in the form, Service Canada may interview you. They may also contact your employer.<\/p>\n<p>Service Canada could decide that you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>quit without having just cause, or<\/li>\n<li>were fired for misconduct.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Being disqualified<\/h2>\n<p>If this happens, Service Canada will tell you in a letter that you <strong>cannot<\/strong> get EI regular benefits. This is called being &#8220;disqualified&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The letter will also tell you that you have the right to ask them to reconsider their decision. This means asking them to review and change their decision.<\/p>\n<p>You must ask for this in writing <strong>within 30 days<\/strong> of finding out about Service Canada&#8217;s decision.
