Here are some examples of when this can happen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Service Canada made a mistake when dealing with your claim.<\/li>\n<li>You or your employer made a mistake when giving information for your EI claim.<\/li>\n<li>You started getting benefits, but Service Canada got new information and decided that you should not have gotten EI during that time.<\/li>\n<li>You got money from your employer, such as termination or severance pay, after you started getting EI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If you disagree<\/h2>\n<p>If you do not agree that you got too much money from EI, you can ask Service Canada to reconsider the decision. This means asking them to review and change it.<\/p>\n<p>You must do this <strong>within 30 days<\/strong> of getting the decision. For more information, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleo.on.ca\/en\/publications\/emplns\/what-can-i-do-if-i-am-not-happy-decision-about-my-ei-claim\">How do I ask for a reconsideration?<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Paying the money back<\/h2>\n<p>If you were not supposed to get the money, you will probably have to pay it back.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not do this, there could be serious consequences. For example, you could be fined, need to work more hours to qualify for EI benefits in the future, or be charged with a crime.<\/p>\n<p>If you cannot pay back the full amount right away, contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and ask to pay it over a period of time. Call <strong>1-866-864-5841<\/strong>. For TTY, call <strong>1-800-665-0354<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Not having to pay it back<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes, Service Canada or the CRA can decide that you do not have to pay the money back.
