{"id":46641,"date":"2012-04-11T20:10:44","date_gmt":"2012-04-12T00:10:44","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2019-05-24T15:37:11","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T15:37:11","slug":"why-do-people-often-not-report-elder-abuse","status":"publish","type":"publications-page","link":"https:\/\/www.cleo.on.ca\/en\/publications-page\/why-do-people-often-not-report-elder-abuse","title":{"rendered":"Why do people often not report elder abuse?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some <strong>victims<\/strong> do not report abuse because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they are afraid of what the abuser will do if they report<\/li>\n<li>they are completely under the control of the abuser and depend on the abuser for food, housing, clothing, and health care<\/li>\n<li>they are afraid they will be put in an institution<\/li>\n<li>they are ashamed to tell anyone that a family member is assaulting them or stealing their money<\/li>\n<li>they think that the police and social agencies cannot help them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sometimes <strong>family, friends, or health and social service providers<\/strong> do not report when they suspect elder abuse because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they do not know who to speak to<\/li>\n<li>they do not know what can be done<\/li>\n<li>they do not want to get involved<\/li>\n<li>the older person asks them not to report it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are other reasons why <strong>people who provide help or services to clients in their own homes<\/strong> may not report elder abuse. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they may believe that they have a confidential relationship with their client and cannot tell anyone else about what happens in the client&#8217;s home<\/li>\n<li>they do not know that assault, theft, or serious neglect in the family or in a long-term care home is a crime<\/li>\n<li>they might be afraid of the abuser<\/li>\n<li>they might believe that the police cannot help because the older person would not be able to testify in court<\/li>\n<li>they might think nothing can be done because the older person might deny the abuse is happening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-46641","publications-page","type-publications-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Why do people often not report elder abuse?
