This means that you were &#8220;exercising your rights under the ESA&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If the Ministry of Labour decides that you were fired for that reason, they can order your employer to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pay you, and<\/li>\n<li>give you back your job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Exercising your rights<\/h2>\n<p>Examples of exercising your legal rights under the ESA are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>taking pregnancy or parental leave<\/li>\n<li>asking about your rights or asking your employer to obey the law<\/li>\n<li>refusing to sign an agreement that affects your rights, for example, an agreement about overtime<\/li>\n<li>making a claim against your employer<\/li>\n<li>giving information to an Employment Standards Officer who is investigating your employer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s against the law for your employer to punish you for exercising your rights that are in the ESA.<\/p>\n<h2>Get legal help<\/h2>\n<p>You should also get legal help if you think you were fired:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>because of your race, sex, age, disability, or other reason that goes against your human rights<\/li>\n<li>because you raised a health or safety issue in the workplace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleo.on.ca\/en\/publications\/beenfired\/where-can-i-find-out-more-and-get-legal-help-1\">Where can I get help and information?<\/a> for where to get legal help.
