{"id":46966,"date":"2012-04-07T22:18:51","date_gmt":"2012-04-08T02:18:51","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-09-19T20:53:51","modified_gmt":"2017-09-19T20:53:51","slug":"what-information-do-i-have-give-ow","status":"publish","type":"publications-page","link":"https:\/\/www.cleo.on.ca\/en\/publications-page\/what-information-do-i-have-give-ow","title":{"rendered":"What information do I have to give OW?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You have to give information about yourself, each member of your family, and anyone else who lives with you.<\/p>\n<p>This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\thow many people are in your family and their ages<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\timmigration status<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\twhat type of housing you live in<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\twhat education you have<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\twhether you are working now and information about past jobs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What information do I have to give about my financial situation?<\/h2>\n<p>You have to give information about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tincome of any kind, which includes money from a job, support payments, or benefits such as Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or Employment Insurance (EI)<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tassets, which include money in bank accounts, registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs), registered education savings plans (RESPs), Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs), insurance policies, and vehicles<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tdebts, which include money you owe on credit cards, to the bank, and to other people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To qualify financially for OW, your <strong>income<\/strong> cannot be more than a certain amount. The amount depends on the size of your family and the cost of your housing.<\/p>\n<p>OW looks at your <strong>assets<\/strong> because your assets cannot be worth more than a certain amount. This amount also depends on the size of your family.<\/p>\n<p>There are some types of income and assets that OW does <strong>not count<\/strong>. For example, they do not count your home, one car, and most household items like furniture and appliances.<\/p>\n<p>But you still have to provide information about all of your income and assets.<\/p>\n<h2>What documents do I have to give OW?<\/h2>\n<p>OW will ask you for documents that relate to yourself and the other people in your household who are included in your application.<\/p>\n<p>The types of documents OW can ask for are listed below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal identification documents, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tbirth certificates or passports<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\thealth cards<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIndian status cards<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\timmigration documents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Documents related to housing, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\trent receipts and leases or tenancy agreements<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tmortgage agreements and statements<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tother bills related to housing costs, such as bills for hydro, water, gas, property tax, and home or apartment insurance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Legal documents, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tseparation or divorce papers<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tcustody documents<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tsupport orders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Proof of income and assets, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tbank statements or bank records<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tevidence of income from any source, including employment, support payments, workers&#39; compensation, and payments from tenants, roomers, and boarders<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tincome tax notices, called <strong>Notice of Assessment from Canada Revenue Agency<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tinformation about assets, including RRSP statements, car ownership papers, life insurance policies, and bonds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Proof of work and education, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tpay stubs, Record of Employment, letter of termination<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tdocuments showing school attendance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Proof of debts, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tcredit card bills or cash advances<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tstudent loans, such as loans from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tother loans, even if the loan is from a relative or friend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"box\">\n<p><strong>Keep copies<\/strong> of any documents that you give to the OW worker. You can ask the worker to make copies of any documents that you bring to the appointment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What other information can OW ask for?<\/h2>\n<p>OW can <strong>only<\/strong> ask you for information that relates to whether you are eligible for financial assistance.<\/p>\n<p>If you think the OW office is being unfair or asking you for information that has nothing to do with whether you are eligible for assistance, contact your community legal clinic. To find the clinic nearest you, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleo.on.ca\/en\/publications\/need-wel\/how-can-i-get-legal-help\">How can I get legal help and information?<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What if I have trouble getting documents?<\/h2>\n<p>You should <strong>not<\/strong> have to give OW any documents that you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tcannot get<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tcannot afford to get<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the OW office asks you to do this, ask them to check the information some other way. Or ask them to pay for the cost of getting the documents.<\/p>\n<p>If you need extra time to get documents, ask the OW office for more time.<\/p>\n<p>If you have trouble getting documents, contact your community legal clinic.
