They help break up text and create white space.<\/p>\n<p>Start your list with a lead-in phrase or sentence to provide context, followed by a colon.<\/p>\n<p>Consider writing the lead-in to avoid \u201cand\u201d or \u201cor\u201d before the final item. This lets the reader know right away what kind of list it is.<\/p>\n<p>Keep lists short and simple, especially if they include points the reader needs to remember or use to make decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Include between <strong>3 to 5<\/strong> items, and 3 is optimal. Use between 5 and 7 items only if the list items are very short, for example, a few words.<\/p>\n<p>You can present the items in your list as phrases or as full sentences with a period at the end.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>use parallel construction and start each item in a list the same way, for example, with a verb or noun<\/li>\n<li>use minimal punctuation and do not use any punctuation when possible<\/li>\n<li>limit a list to one and no more than 2 levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"box-indent orange\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"blue\">Example with phrases and no punctuation:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the police stop you when you\u2019re driving, you must give them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>your driver\u2019s licence<\/li>\n<li>ownership papers<\/li>\n<li>insurance papers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"box-indent orange\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"blue\">Example with full sentences:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some reasons to choose an option other than court:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have more control over what happens.<\/li>\n<li>It can be faster and cheaper.<\/li>\n<li>It can be less upsetting and stressful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"box-indent orange\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"blue\">Example to avoid \u201cand\u201d before final item:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You have the right to do <strong>all <\/strong>of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>make as many phone calls as you need to find a lawyer<\/li>\n<li>talk to your lawyer in private before deciding to make a statement<\/li>\n<li>have your lawyer with you when the police speak to you<\/li>\n<li>call an adult you trust for support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"box-indent orange\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"blue\">Example with \u201cor\u201d before final item:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If an adult commits these crimes, they could:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be fined up to $5,000,<\/li>\n<li>go to prison for up to 6 months, or<\/li>\n<li>pay the fine and go to prison.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"box-indent orange\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"blue\">Example to avoid &#8220;or&#8221; before final item:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If an adult commits these crimes, <strong>one<\/strong> of the following could happen. They could:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be fined up to $5,000<\/li>\n<li>go to prison for up to 6 months<\/li>\n<li>pay the fine and go to prison<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"numbered-lists\">Numbered lists<\/h2>\n<p>Use a numbered list if you want to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stress that there are a certain number of items or tasks that a reader must do<\/li>\n<li>show that steps must be followed in a certain order<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"box-indent orange\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"blue\">Example:<\/span><\/strong> <br \/>If you live together, Ontario Works will decide you are spouses if\u00a0<strong>all<\/strong><strong>\u00a03<\/strong> of the following are true:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You have been living together for at least 3 months.<\/li>\n<li>One of you supports the other financially or the two of you support each other.<\/li>\n<li>You \u201clive together as a couple\u201d, not as two single people.
