If you speak French<\/h2>\n

In many cases you have the right to government services and legal proceedings in French, including hearings before French-speaking decision-makers.<\/p>\n

If you have a legal problem, you can ask a lawyer or a community legal clinic about your French language rights.<\/p>\n

People who are not Canadian citizens can be arrested and detained by the police and also by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) for reasons set out in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. CBSA has the power to enforce immigration law. To arrest and detain a permanent resident in Canada, CBSA must have a warrant.<\/p>\n

In most cases<\/strong>, if you are stopped and questioned by the police, you do not have to answer their questions, but it is a good idea to be polite.<\/p>\n

There is no general requirement to carry identification papers. However, in some cases you may be required to have specific documents. For example, you must have a valid driver’s licence with you when you are
