Getting legal help: A directory of community legal clinics in Ontario

Community legal clinics

Legal Aid Ontario funds legal clinics across Ontario. There are 2 types of legal clinics: community legal clinics and specialty legal clinics.

Community legal clinics provide information, advice, and representation on various legal issues, including income assistance, housing, refugee and immigration law, employment law, human rights, workers’ compensation, consumer law, and the Canada Pension Plan. Some legal clinics do not handle all of these issues, but staff may be able to refer you to someone who can help.

Community legal clinics are staffed by lawyers, community legal workers, and sometimes law students. All help is private and confidential and free.

To qualify for services:

  • your legal issue must be one the clinic handles,
  • you must live in the area the clinic serves, and
  • your income and assets cannot be above a certain level.

To find out if you qualify, contact your local legal clinic. Most legal clinics provide brief advice, or “summary advice”, without asking about your financial situation.

Specialty community legal clinics

Specialty community legal clinics serve specific groups of people or focus on a specific area of law. Most specialty clinics are not limited to serving a particular geographic area.

How to find a community legal clinic

In this directory you will find contact information for community legal clinics in Ontario. To find the legal clinic that serves your area, you can call Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) at one of the numbers listed on page 3. You can also go to the LAO website at legalaid.on.ca/legal-clinics and enter your address or postal code

Other legal help

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO)

To get help from LAO, your legal problem must be one that LAO covers, and you must be financially eligible.

In addition to funding community legal clinics, some other services that LAO provides includes:

  • A toll-free call centre that gives general legal information and advice, as well as information about other social service providers, in over 200 languages
  • Help from courthouse lawyers (called duty counsel) for people who are in court without a lawyer
  • Certificates (vouchers to pay for a lawyer to represent you) for people who need a lawyer for some criminal, family, and immigration and refugee law problems
  • Certificates for people who have experienced domestic violence

If you speak French

In many cases, you have the right to government services and legal actions in French. This includes hearings with French-speaking decision-makers. Ask a lawyer or community legal clinic about your French-language rights.
