New information on how to reclaim your Indigenous name

Steps to Justice has new information on how to reclaim an Indigenous name. Many Indigenous children were forced to give up their traditional names when they were taken from their families and sent to residential schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission made a call to action for governments to let Indigenous peoples reclaim their traditional name at no cost.

In response, the Ontario government has waived the fees for residential school survivors and their families to reclaim their traditional names until March 31, 2024. And the federal government has waived the fees to change the name on citizenship and travel documents for all Indigenous peoples until May 30, 2026.
